Sorry Messages for Your Partner (Sincere, Not Cliché)
Updated 3 October 2026 ·2 min read
A good apology has three parts: say what went wrong, show you understand how they feel, and say what you will change. The messages below are a place to start.
Three steps to a real apology
- 1Name the mistake. "I'm sorry I was late last night" is more sincere than "Sorry if you were upset".
- 2Acknowledge their feelings. Show you understand why they were hurt, without excuses.
- 3Make a small promise you can keep, not a big one you can't.
Short messages
I'm sorry. You matter more than my pride.
I'm bad at making up, but I really am sorry. Forgive me?
A longer message
I'm sorry for what I said. I know it made you feel unappreciated, and that is not how I feel about you. Next time I'll stop and listen before I answer. Will you give me the chance to make it right?
For a husband or wife
We have been through so much together, and I don't want one misunderstanding to become a wall between us. I'm sorry, love.
A Malay pantun to say sorry
Hujan renyai di waktu senja, Burung pipit pulang ke sarang; Maafkan saya, tidak sengaja, Sayang awak tidak pernah kurang.
Phrases to avoid
- "Sorry if you felt hurt": it puts the blame on their feelings.
- "I'm sorry, but...": the "but" cancels the apology.
- Joking too early, before they are ready.
